Before you email about a lost dive: export a backup first, from Tools ▸ Sync & Backup ▸ Export Dive Log. It writes a single file containing every dive, and it means whatever happens next cannot make things worse.

Common questions

I can't log in and I'm sure the password is right

Use Forgot password? on the login form. The link works once and expires in one hour, and asking for a new one cancels the older links — so if you have several emails, use the most recent. An older link will say it is no longer valid, which is the expected answer rather than a fault.

Do I need an account?

No. The app is free and works fully offline with no account — the logbook, the calculators, dive computer import, photos and UDDF export all work on the phone alone.

Making an account costs nothing. Cloud Sync, which keeps your dives on our server so another device can reach them, is $4.99 a year through Apple.

Where are my dives stored?

On your phone, always. With Cloud Sync they also sync to the server so another device can reach them. Deleting the app removes the local copy — export a backup first.

Does the app sync automatically?

Yes, with Cloud Sync. It syncs when you open the app, when you come back to it, and a couple of seconds after any change. Force Sync on the Sync & Backup screen is there for a flaky connection; you should not normally need it.

The water body is wrong, or says it can't identify the water

Water identification uses offline map data with a live lookup as a fallback, and neither knows every quarry, spring or private lake. "Couldn't identify the water body" often means exactly that — there is no mapped water at that point — rather than that something is broken. You can always type the site name yourself.

Check the salt/fresh toggle if the water was misidentified, because it feeds the MOD and PPO₂ calculations.

Why does the gas planner say I need more gas than I expected?

Because it computes a rock bottom reserve: enough for you and a buddy to share air from the deepest point, ascend at a safe rate, and complete a safety stop. That is usually more than the "surface with 500 psi" habit, and it is the number that survives a real emergency. You can adjust the assumptions on that screen.

Can I import my dives from another app?

Yes, if it writes UDDF — the open format Subsurface, MacDive and most other logbooks read and write. Tools ▸ Other Logbooks imports a UDDF file and exports one.

UDDF is not a backup in either direction: suit, weight, visibility, weather, navigation, buddy and favorites have nowhere to live in it and stay behind. A SafetyStop JSON backup (Sync & Backup ▸ Import Backup) is the complete copy of your dives. If your log is stuck in an app that writes neither, email and say which app; that is useful to know.

SafetyStop has no decompression model

It calculates gas requirements, maximum operating depth, equivalent air depth and PPO₂ from the numbers you enter, and it looks up no-decompression limits from published recreational tables (PADI RDP).

Those table values are for a first dive only — a repetitive dive has a shorter limit, and this app does not calculate residual nitrogen or surface intervals. There is no tissue model here: your dive computer tracks your real profile and its limit is the one to follow.

It does not replace your dive computer or your training. Always dive within your certification and follow your computer.

Reporting a bug

Email support@safetystop.cloud with what you did, what you expected, and what happened instead. A screenshot helps more than a description. Your iOS version and iPhone model help too.
